The Pledge of Allegiance: A Short History for Kids
The Pledge of Allegiance is a special promise that shows how much we love our country, the United States of America. Here’s a simple story about how it all started!
A long time ago, in 1892, a man named Francis Bellamy came up with the Pledge. He wanted kids to feel proud of their country. He wrote it for a big celebration about Christopher Columbus, who discovered America!
Today, we say the Pledge of Allegiance in schools and at special events. When we say it, we stand up, face the flag, and put our right hand over our heart to show respect.
The Pledge helps us remember to be good citizens and to care for one another. It’s a way to show our love for our country and the freedom we enjoy!
Flag Day: A Fun History for Kids
Flag Day is a special day when we celebrate the American flag! Here’s a simple story about what Flag Day is and why it’s important.
What is Flag Day:
Flag Day is celebrated on June 14th every year. It’s a day to honor the American flag and everything it stands for, like freedom and unity!
The First Flag:
A long time ago, in 1777, the Continental Congress decided that the United States should have its own flag. This flag had 13 stripes for the original 13 colonies and stars to represent each state.
The Idea of Flag Day:
The idea of Flag Day started with a man named Bernard J. Cigrand. In 1885, he wanted people to celebrate the flag, so he suggested that June 14th be a special day just for the flag!
Official Recognition:
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially declared June 14th as Flag Day. Later, in 1949, Congress made it a national holiday so everyone could celebrate!
How We Celebrate:
On Flag Day, people show their love for the flag by flying it outside their homes, having parades, and learning more about its history. It’s a great time to remember how special our flag is!
Celebrating a Milestone: Our Country’s 250th Birthday!
This year marks a significant milestone in our nation’s history—the 250th birthday of the United States! As we reflect on the journey of our country, we have a unique opportunity to teach our children about our rich heritage, values, and the importance of community. In celebration of this special occasion, various events and initiatives will take place throughout the year, including patriotic programs, educational events, historical reenactments, and community gatherings designed to foster national pride and unity.
Join us at Sauerpuss and Friends as we explore themed activities and crafts throughout the year, helping our little ones understand the significance of this momentous birthday while encouraging them to appreciate their role in shaping the future of our great nation!
